This season, fans will notice a few changes at Heinz Field. From the field where their favorite players play, to the way they watch replays, to the food they eat – fans are in-store for some really cool new features for the 2017 NFL and NCAA seasons.
New Playing Surface
For the first time since 2003, the entire 6 in. of the playing surface has been replaced at Heinz Field. The field crew here have brought in all new sod and field from our farms in New Jersey for the 2017 season.
Why New Jersey? The soil you find closer to the shore is more sand-based, which allows for better water flow. The soil you find closer inland typically is more clay based and will hold water longer.
We also upgraded the heating system underneath the field, to help soften the field during the colder months. We all love a good snowy game here in Pittsburgh, but having a softer field is actually better for player safety. The NFL tests all fields before the start of each game to ensure that players will be not be hurt by the stiffness of the turf under them – this is our way of going above and beyond to protect our players (and even their opponents).
Well… maybe it isn’t new. But it sure is bigger.

We upgraded the technology in our south end zone scoreboard to Daktronics’ 13HD product. To fit the HD proportions, the screen increased in size to 41 ft. high and 123.5 ft. wide – roughly a 45% increase from what fans have grown accustomed to.
The new board totals 5,050 sq. ft. and will give fans one of the clearest views no matter where they sit. The new technology also allows for variable content zoning which allows it to show one large image or to be divided into multiple zones to show any combination of live video, instant replays, up-to-the-minute statistics, animations and much more.
Don’t worry, the ketchup bottles still pour when the team enters the red zone!
More Fan Engagement
We know that when you come to Heinz Field, you come to enjoy yourself and we take pride in giving you one of the best experiences in sports and entertainment. This year, we are going to be even more active in engaging with you, the fan, during the game. Do you have a question or issue? Give us a shout on social media! We might not be able to “like” all of your selfies, but if you reach out to us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter we will get back to you ASAP with any help you need!
New Steelers Mobile App Location Based Info
When you download the Steelers App or update to the latest version, you will be able to select “Location-Based Alerts” within the app settings. By allowing these proximity notifications the app will be able to tell when you step inside Heinz Field. Fans using the app inside the stadium will be able to get to exclusive content only those inside the stadium can access!
One of the coolest features is being able to watch on-demand replays from the game. We even installed a new replay technology called Dreamcatcher, that gives us new angles in 4K Ultra HD. That means you will be able to see the shred of grass between the end zone and AB’s toes right on your phone!
Cue the mouth-watering! Each year we try to shake things up a bit when it comes to concessions and this year is no different. Our friends at Aramark are featuring all new food you can find throughout the stadiums on game days. Check out the new food coming to a food stand near you:
