ATI SALUTE TO HEROES (3rd quarter)

The highest award for valor in action, the Medal of Honor is bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Forces of the United States. For the first time ever, the Steelers will celebrate two Medal of Honor recipients in the ATI Salute to Heroes.
Chief Warrant Officer-4 Woody Williams is the last surviving Marine with the Medal of Honor from WWII. Williams served in the Battle of Iwo Jima with the 21st Marines, 3rd Marine Division. His unyielding determination and extraordinary heroism in the face of ruthless enemy resistance were directly instrumental in neutralizing one of the most fanatically defended Japanese strong points encountered. Williams has penned dozens of resolutions to help veterans and other causes in his home state of West Virginia and throughout the United States.
Colonel Walter Joe Marm Jr. is the only surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the State of Pennsylvania. A Washington, PA native and Duquesne alumn, Marm enlisted in the Army and fought in the Vietnam War. Marm was part of the Army’s new concept of warfare, the airmobile assault. During a mission to relieve a friendly unit surrounded by enemy forces, Marm single-handedly fought off approaching enemy units to save his platoon. He would also deliberately expose himself to draw heavy fire and save his crew. Marm is a life-long Steeler fan and this is his first game at Heinz Field.
